Greninja is the Pokemon of the year, Pikachu is not in the top 10

Greninja is officially Pokemon of the Year, winning a fan-voted contest organized by Google and The Pokemon Company. Generation VI Pokemon have beaten a number of competitions including Lucario, Mimikyu, and Charizard, with the Pikachu series mascot nowhere on the list.

Google ran the competition for 10 days, allowing fans to vote for their favorite Pokemon in each region. Googling "Pokemon Vote" fans could contribute to the event, without the results being revealed today by the search engine.

Greninja was perhaps a surprising winner for the competition, as many predicted that a Pokemon from the Kanto region like Charizard would top the list. However, Charizard didn't even make it into the top three, while Pikachu was completely absent from the top 10 despite being the face of the franchise. Eevee also didn't make the cut, although two of his evolutions did, despite being arguably the series' secondary mascot following the success of Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu and Let's Go! Eevee.

Lucario came in at number two, while Mimikyu was another surprising runner-up. The evolutions of Eevee Umbreon and Sylveon also made their appearance on the list, along with Garchomp, Sayquaza, Gardevoir and Gengar.

Additionally, The Pokemon Company has revealed a brand new Mythical Pokemon in the form of Zarude, a "rogue monkey" who will make his way to Pokemon Sword and Shield. His quick wits help him excel in battles. "
