Who is Samantha Maxis in Call of Duty Zombies? - History and background

Call of Duty Zombies has been running for a long time now, and since its inception, it has established some core characteristics. This includes mechanics like upgrading your weapon to the Pack-a-Punch machine or buying perks via Perk-a-Colas, but its characters help the twisted story thrive.

Although she was never a playable character (other than being an operator in Black Ops Cold War), Samantha Maxis is as synonymous with Zombie as any other feature. If you're wondering who she is, here's everything you need to know about who Samantha Maxis is in Call of Duty Zombies.

To keep things as simple as possible, we'll go through Sam's story in order of the game's release. Please note that we are discussing various versions of the same characters that appear in the games, so we will try to make these descriptions as simple as possible.

Samantha Maxis is the daughter of Ludvig Maxis, leader of Group 935, a secret German group during the World Wars who experiments with Element 115, zombies, teleporters and many weapons. Throughout the games, she has had a special bond with zombies, sometimes gaining control of them. Her dog, Fluffy, was transformed into the first Hellhound. Throughout all iterations, she is voiced by Julie Nathanson.

From this point forward, Samantha will be referred to as Sam or Samantha. Maxis will be used to describe her father as is commonly done in games.

Trama Ultimis Aether (Call of Duty: World at War-Black Ops II)

Samantha's role in the Ultimis Aether storyline occurs primarily during the first two Zombie iterations in World at War and Black Ops. She is mentioned in Black Ops II before the Origins map, but she doesn't have much presence.

World at war

To begin Samantha's story, Edward Richtofen, a man who worked closely with Maxis, experiences Sam's dog, Fluffy's, in a teleport to the Group 935 weapons factory called Der Riese (The Giant in German). Events end up turning Fluffy into a Hellhound. Sam, being quite angry about this, rushes to his dog in the teleporter. Maxis runs after her and Richtofen traps them all inside, sending them away and believing them dead. Instead, Samantha is teleported to Griffin Station on the Moon.

While at Griffin Station, Sam makes contact with the Moon Pyramid Device (MPD). When he hides inside the MPD, he gains complete control of the zombies. Richtofen takes Maxis to Griffin Station to try to calm Samantha and lure her out of the MPD Instead, Maxis orders her to kill them all before committing suicide. Her soul lives on, however, and has more of an impact on the story. Enraged at the sight of her deceased father, she unleashes the zombies on Griffin Station, killing everyone but Richtofen.

Black operations

While Sam is in control of the zombies for most of World at War and Black Ops, he doesn't have much to do with the story. She is always present as the game announcer shouting “Bring me their souls” during Hellhound rounds and announcing the power-ups upon retirement, but until Moon, she doesn't have a direct impact.

On Moon, Richtofen's Ultimis crew, Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski and Takeo Masaki force Samantha out of the MPD and Richtofen forces her to swap bodies with him so she can control the zombies. Samantha then convinces Dempsey, Takeo and Nikolai to help her stop Richtofen from taking control of everything by launching three missiles at Earth, essentially destroying everything and leaving the planet in pieces. Instead of leaving Samantha trapped on the Moon in Richtofen's body, Maxis has her soul sent to a dimension called Agartha.

Black ops ii

Samantha is not included directly in the Black Ops II Zombie story until Origins, which is a different timeline at this point. In previous maps, Victis' crew are repairing the polarizing devices so that Maxis can reach Samantha in Agartha. However, Samantha realizes that her father has been corrupted by the dark ether and begins to reach out to another version of Maxis in a separate timeline which leads us to the Primis storyline.

Trama Primis Aether (Call of Duty: Black Ops II-Black Ops IV)

Black Ops II (solo Origins)

Although Origins was the final Zombie map in Black Ops II, it was the start of a new storyline taking place in a separate dimension from what we were used to.

After finding her father corrupted by the dark ether and being trapped in Agartha, Samantha reaches another version of Maxis in a separate dimension. This version of Maxis is working on an excavation site in northern France for Group 935 along with a new Richtofen. This version of Maxis has never had a daughter, but she is convinced that Samantha is the key to unlocking the secrets of Element 115. After a zombie outbreak, Richtofen extracts Maxis' brain to put him in a drone to prevent him from dying. completely due to a zombie bite. At this point, alternate versions of Dempsey, Nikolai and Takeo arrive to take out Richtofen, but Samantha intervenes and asks them to free her from Agartha.

Black Ops III

Black Ops III's Zombies storyline revolves primarily around the Primis crew, with Samantha taking a back seat. She is there in the background, but that's all for the inclusion of her.

After the Primis crew released Samantha from Agartha, she is transported to "The House", the home of Dr. Monty, an entity we would like to be a god to keep things as simple as possible.

In the early days of Sam's stay at the House, Monty restores Maxis' brain to a new body and eliminates the corrupted Maxis from existence. He also discovers that Sam is corrupt, takes her away for an indefinite period of time and brings her back with her "restored innocence". This means that the Dark Aether no longer has a hold on her and does not behave hostile or violent towards others. Oddly enough, this also makes her speak with an American accent instead of a German one.

After a short time, Samantha is introduced to Eddie, a different version of Richtofen as a child whose innocence has also been restored. As time passes, the Primis crew obtains alternate souls of Dempsey, Takeo and Nikolai for Monty to purify and create child forms so they can join Sam and Eddie in The House.

In the cyclic cycle, all characters are blocked; this is the end of Samantha's story. She resides in the house until the Shadowman attacks in Revelations and the Primis crew is sent back in time to continue the cycle.

Black Ops IV

During the events of Blood of the Dead in Black Ops IV, the aforementioned cycle is interrupted and the Primis crew disrupts their predetermined paths and works to fight against Monty, who is actually an antagonist of this story. . Samantha doesn't begin to be fully recognized until the fourth map, Alpha Omega.

To prevent Monty from killing Sam and Eddie, Maxis sends the two children via teleportation to the Primis and Ultimis teams in Nuketown. A split second before being teleported, Samantha sees Monty kill Maxis. On the other hand, she is outraged and shows that there is still some of that Dark Aether power in her from her past.

Later, Primis Nikolai leads everyone into a forest to celebrate their upcoming victory over Monty. Once Victis' crew creates Agarthan's device to destroy the summoning key, he kills the rest of the Primis crew and the Ultimis crew. Being the last one standing and knowing that he must die to end the current state of the multiverse, Nikolai hands Samantha a gun so she can kill him. With all versions of the Primis and Ultimis crew dead, the multiverse can restore itself without the constant threat of the Dark Aether and Agartha. He then walks with Eddie into a new reality that brings us to the Dark Aether storyline that began in Black Ops Cold War.

Black Ops Cold War

After arriving in a new universe after the destruction of the multiverse, Samantha lost all memories of her previous life and grew up in an orphanage. She is now an adult and essentially a super spy, working alongside her friend Weaver, one of the leaders of Requiem. Without Richtofen, Dempsey, Takeo and Nikolai, this grown-up Samantha Maxis has taken a much more significant part of the spotlight.

After obtaining information from a KGB contact, Samantha warns Weaver that the Omega group has unearthed an old Nazi research area called Project Endstation. With Omega's meddling, the portals of the Dark Aether are opened and the zombies enter the world. This starts the events of the map, Die Maschine.

After warning Endstation's Requiem, Sam heads to Firebase Z, where he meets an Omega defector named Sergei Ravenov. After infiltrating the base, she is captured and tortured by an American scientist who works with the Russians named William Peck. She opens a portal to the dark ether and throws it into her, believing that she is dying inside her. However, Requiem arrives and opens a new portal to bring her back. She has been there for a couple of days in real time, but from her point of view, she has been there for months as time works differently there. While Samantha has spent a lot of time in the Dark Aether, she proves to be a survivor and is minimally affected by the effects of the Dark Aether on the human psyche.

Upon Samantha's return to Requiem, she is quarantined and Weaver gives her a Rottweiler to keep her company. Even with this enforced quarantine, Samantha sneaks on a mission for Requiem agents in Outbreak, where they meet up with Ravenov and destroy some Omega warheads. They are covered in storm aether crystals that could create huge dark aether portals wherever they are fired. To keep this power away from Omega and Requiem, she tells Ravenov to send them to the Pacific Ocean.

After going behind Weaver and Requiem, Samantha is forced into a stricter quarantine and tests personally supervised by the director of Requiem, which we ...
