Will the icebreaker be coming to Destiny 2? Answered

Destiny fans love the games' exotic armor and weapons. From Destiny 1 classics like Gjallarhorn and Zhalo Supercell to Destiny 2 newcomers like Eyes of Tomorrow and Dead Man's Tale, the series' seven-year history is filled with gameplay-defining elements. One of the original weapons that shaped the world of Destiny at launch in 2014 was Ice Breaker, an exotic sniper rifle that regenerated its own ammo and had explosive bullets, making it a choice for many in both PvE and PvP content.

The last time we saw Ice Breaker was Destiny 3 year 1, which reintroduced the gun into the sandbox after skipping The Taken King. The entire D2 so far has gone without it, and fans have been wondering since the game's release if the famous weapon would return.

While online rumors of an Icebreaker return surfaced ahead of the release of the 30th anniversary update thanks to a questionable Reddit thread, so far Bungie hasn't indicated that the exotic sniper is coming to Destiny 2.

Should the sniper make his return in an upcoming expansion like The Witch Queen or one of its accompanying seasons, the Guardians should expect him to be quite different from his original incarnation as well. Older weapons like Hawkmoon, Thorn, and even the Gjallarhorn were partially or completely overhauled when upgrading to Destiny 2, and Bungie has placed less emphasis on ammo regeneration for special weapons such as snipers since the second game, usually with a focus on using ammunition from reserves instead.

Ice Breaker may not be confirmed for Destiny 2, but fans can likely find what they liked about the weapon to some degree in other snipers. Praedyth's Revenge, itself a throwback weapon from the first available game from the Vault of Glass raid, can roll with Rewind Rounds and Firefly, giving it the respective abilities to automatically recharge from reserves based on the number of hits and cause solar explosions with precision kills. It might not be infinite ammo, but it shares many of the traits that made Ice Breaker a must-have in its heyday, and those willing to part with Firefly's explosive damage can instead use high-impact shots for powerful damage from boss in PvE.
