New details and Collector's Edition for Resident Evil 2 Remake

Capcom reveals new information about the Resident Evil 2 remake during San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Included the announcement of the Collector's Edition Gamestop exclusive in the USA and the game's box art.

The new character design

The Japanese company explains that the character design has been, in part, revised for Resident Evil 2 Remake. In particular Leon's and Claire Redfield. Let's go see all the details together.

The look of the young Leon

In this remake Leon's look is more youthful. The goal was to give it a beginner look, rookie, in contrast to the hero he will become later in the series. Leon is famous for having one of the worst first days on the job in history (they canceled his welcome party and all). A lot of thought has been given to how to achieve Leon's new look with modern photorealistic graphics. Consequently, the team created a physical version of Leon's costume, using photogrammetry technology to scan his clothes in the game, and then added small details and tweaks.

The heroine Claire Redfield

Resident Evil 2 isn't complete without Claire, our heroine arriving in Raccoon City athe search for his brother Chris. Claire's updated design uses the same technology, by scanning a real world costume to capture every detail of her dress. The team had quite a bit of discussion on how to design her new look. In what percentage they should have kept the original appearance and how much to renew it. Ultimately, the team decided on a look that would align with the iconic scene of Claire entering Raccoon City on her motorcycle. The developers are extremely happy with their final project, and I hope you all like it too!

Ready to go back to Raccoon City

For the realization of the famous city, the team has focused attention on two concepts that permeate the whole game: the feeling of humidity and the fear of the dark. Using the powerful RE ENGINE graphics engine, the team was able to achieve their goal of creating a sense of dread through strong visual cues. Resident Evil 2 events take place on a rainy day in Raccoon City, causing puddles and flooding in some parts of the city, while other areas are engulfed from the grotesque consequences of clashes with the undead and other terrors that lurk in the dark.

It's not Resident Evil 2 without zombies

Hirabayashi and the team had a long discussion on how to bring about the scourge of the undead in the remake. In short words, they wanted to create something monstrous that the player doesn't want to be bitten by. To this end, the zombies were created with the same concepts as the settings: darkness and a damp feeling, ensuring that each encounter is as tense and terrifying as the previous one.
