Pokemon Masters Evolve | How evolution works with synchronization pairs

There's a brand new Pokemon released today, and it's the latest mobile game from the creators of Pokemon Go. It's a strategy fighter only available on iOS and Android and it's called Pokemon Masters. The big twist is that this time around, players can bring both their Pokemon and their trainers into battle, and these two are linked in what the game calls "sync pairs." The more important question then is: Can players really evolve Pokemon this time around? We have a Pokemon Masters evolve guide to answer this question.

That said, there are actually a lot of questions about how to evolve Pokemon Pokemon Masters. If evolution is in the game, how does it work with the concept of synchronization pairs? Are there any synchronization pairs that cannot evolve? How do you evolve the Pokemon that can do it and how much does it cost? Are there also Final and Mega Evolutions? We'll see if we can answer all of these.

Pokemon Masters Evolve | Can Pokemon be Evolved into Sync Pairs?

Pokemon Masters Evolve | How evolution works with synchronization pairs

Starting with the most obvious question, is it actually possible to evolve Pokemon into Pokemon Masters? The good news is yes, there is absolutely evolution in the new game, just as there has been in virtually every Pokemon title to date. With the introduction of the sync pairs mechanic, however, where you control trainers and Pokemon, how does it work?

Basically, evolution in Pokemon Masters requires first synchronization pairs to reach a certain level, which is usually level 30 for Pokemon to evolve to their second stage. You will also need a certain amount of coins and a lot of materials to allow evolution. Maybe of course you only evolve Pokemon, not human trainers as well. The problem is that only a few Pokemon in particular sync pairs can have evolved at this time. Pikachu, for example, cannot be evolved at this time. We don't know if this will change in the future Pokemon Masters update as this type of game adds regular new content, but for now only a select group can make evolutions.

Pokemon Masters Evolve | Which Pokemon in sync pairs can evolve?

As you've probably gathered with the introduction of sync pairs, Pokemon Masters doesn't follow the usual rules of Pokemon games. The level 30 requirement we talked about earlier is much higher than most Pokemon games for some Pokemon. However, if you've played previous Pokemon games before, you'll at least know the evolutionary chains they all advance on, such as Piplup on Prinplup and then Empolean. As also mentioned, only certain Pokemon in particular sync pairs can actually evolve right now. Here is the list of the ones we know right now that may have evolved:

  • Agata and Gengar
  • Barry & Piplup
  • Bugsy e Beedrill
  • Karen & Houndoom
  • Korrina e Lucario
  • Kris e Totodile
  • Noland and Pinsir
  • Pryce & Dewgong
  • Rosa and Snivy
  • Wikstrom and Aegislash

While this is a rather long list of sync pairs that Pokemon can evolve into, this leaves an even longer list of sync pairs that cannot be evolved. The most significant name on the list is, of course, the main character and Pikachu himself, who is to remain as Pikachu at the moment. There is no reason to assume, however, that this list won't change, since Pokemon Masters is a mobile game and will no doubt go through many, many changes over the course of its lifespan. For now, though, here's the list of sync pairs whose Pokemon can't receive an evolution:

  • Player and Pikachu
  • Blaine and Ponyta
  • Brock & Onix
  • Brawly & Makuhita
  • Brendan and Treeko
  • Clay & Palpitoad
  • Grant & Amaura
  • Lt. Surge & Voltorb
  • Maylene and Meditation
  • Ramos and Weepinbell
  • Roark e Cranidos
  • Roxanne e Nosepass
  • Roxie & Whirlipede

To the big question then, how exactly do you evolve those Pokemon that can have evolved in the game? You will first need to reach at least level 30 with your sync pair. Pokemon that have second level evolutions can evolve when you reach this level, which in the game is referred to as a Stage 1 sync pair. To get Pokemon that have third stage evolution, like Piplup in Empolean, to get to that point , you will need to get your characters to level 45. At this point they will become a Stage 2 sync pair, and you can enter that Pokemon's next evolution stage.

Once you reach level 30, you will get a new type of mission simply called an Evolution Mission. This is a special story battle for that trainer and Pokemon sync pair in particular, and you can find it in the Sync Pair Stories section of the menu. It will be called something like "Piplup Evolution". There are some big consequences to these missions, and the most obvious is that they are actually quite difficult.

If you try one at the minimum level you will have to struggle to succeed, so while officially level 30 is when you can evolve your Pokemon, you may want to get a little higher than that before trying. If you still complete the mission, you will have earned an evolution for your Pokemon. You will then have to wait for at least level 45 before you can attempt the third stage evolution.

The other big problem with all of this, aside from the fact that it is generally very difficult to win the battle of Evolution, is that none of these are free. Once you reach level 30 and want to try an Evolution mission, it costs five Evolution Shards to even attempt the mission. If you fail the battle, which is very likely if you are only level 30, it will cost you another five Shards to play it again, Sam.

You can only get these Evolution Shards from Tricia's shop. The first five-shard pack will cost you 1000 coins, but exchanges can get significantly more expensive thereafter. Things also get worse when you get to level 45 and want to consider your evolution to the third stage, as it will cost three Crystal Evolution stones instead. These cost 5000 coins for your first three stones, and this increases to a ridiculous 300.000 coins later. Make sure you pass this second battle of Evolution for the first time, otherwise things will get very expensive!

Pokemon Masters Evolve | What are the benefits of Pokemon evolution?

The main advantage of evolving Pokemon is that it will give your sync pairs a significant stat boost, making any subsequent battles much easier. This is made even better by the evolution of the third stage, the Final Evolution, which actually gives your sync pair an all-new powerful sync move for battle. Given how useful Move Sync Pokemon Masters are, it is therefore extremely useful to evolve your Pokemon as soon as possible if you can.

Pokemon Masters Evolve | Are there mega-evolutions?

While Pokemon Sword and Shield apparently won't be making an appearance for the Switch, Mega Evolutions is absolutely Pokemon Masters present. However, at the moment, only a few Pokemon can undergo a Mega transformation, including Pidgeot, Lucario, and Houndoom. For Mega Evolve, you simply need to activate your sync move in battle. This will give you more stats and new type attacks for the rest of the battle, so it's worth doing where possible.
