If you're looking to breed the best Pokemon possible - perhaps with perfect stats or shinies, which the Masuda Method can help you with - you'll want a Ditto that makes your life easier. Usually, players will need two Pokemon of the same species to reproduce, although thanks to the famous first generation shapeshifting abilities of the purple blob, Ditto can replace any species. Therefore, this Pokemon Sword and Shield Ditto location will help you achieve a better breeding schedule.
Where to catch Ditto in Pokemon Sword and Shield
Ditto is found in the lake of Outrage
Wild Area region. The encounter is not time-dependent, like many others, and the Pokemon will visibly roam the world in sections of tall grass. Here you can quite commonly encounter Ditto, regardless of whether you are playing Pokemon Sword or Pokemon Shield.

Location | How to unlock
Ditto isn't known for his stature, so it can be easy to get lost hiding in the blades of grass if you're not careful. We recommend pressing the right analog stick (R3) to get closer to the two Wild Area viewpoints available for easier identification. Conducting your research throughout the day can also help with visibility, although we found three in a single patch of grass, so don't worry too much as they're not too rare generations.
When you find one, immediately run to unleash a battle and capture the Ditto with a Pokeball.
Here is a quick rundown for all TL people; DR:
- Reach the Lake of Outrage
in the wilderness (map location pictured above). - Patrol the patches of tall grass looking for a ditto: game time and time of day don't matter.
- If you're having trouble spotting one, be sure to use the closest point of view (press R3) and search in daylight.
- When you see a Ditto in the afterlife, run straight towards it to start a battle.
- Use immediately a Velox Ball
if you have one. - If the problem persists, carefully weaken the Ditto to catch him without making him pass out.
