Destiny 2's next big expansion is the Witch Queen, when Savathun finally arrives in the game after years of evil machinations. The original plan was to release the expansion in 2021 until Bungie announced the decision to move The Witch Queen expansion's release to early 2022.

Bungie will release an additional season to bridge the gap between the season following Season of the Chosen and the release of the new expansion. At the time of writing, it remains to be seen how this new season will play into the general narrative of the Destiny universe.

In a recent post detailing upcoming game changes and expansion delay, Bungie said this new expansion represents a major evolution in Destiny 2's ongoing narrative. Using what was introduced with Beyond Light as base, the studio wants to make sure it can upgrade existing systems to make its vision of Destiny a definitive action MMO.
